What We Know About DTCC's Upcoming Canton Pilot

June 2026

DTCC is the post-trade backbone of the U.S. capital markets. Its subsidiaries processed $4.7 quadrillion in securities transactions in 2025.¹ When an institution of that size commits to tokenizing assets on a blockchain network, it is worth paying close attention to the details.

How DTCC Got Here

On December 11, 2025, the SEC issued a No-Action Letter allowing DTC to offer a pilot tokenization service for certain highly liquid assets.² Six days later, DTCC announced its partnership with Digital Asset and the Canton Network.

DTCC officially joined Canton as a Super Validator following the approval of governance proposal CIP-0083.³ Alongside the SV role, DTCC assumed a leadership position within the Canton Foundation as co-chair alongside Euroclear, enabling it to participate in setting industry-wide standards for decentralized financial infrastructure.⁴

DTCC's CC holdings are not publicly disclosed, which is consistent with how most institutional SVs handle their token positions.

What the Pilot Actually Involves

DTCC will mint a portion of its custodied U.S. Treasury securities on the Canton Network within a controlled production environment. This allows DTC participants to switch between traditional ledger-based and tokenized forms for selected supported assets while maintaining the same CUSIP, investor protection, and ownership.⁵

The initial phase focuses on U.S. Treasuries, creating on-chain assets held by DTCC members and custodied at DTC. Broader industry rollout is expected in the second half of 2026, including additional DTC and Fed-eligible assets. With more than $100 trillion in asset inventory, DTCC can create a liquid pool of convertible DTC and Fed-eligible securities that accelerates industry adoption.⁶

The technology layer involves DTCC's own ComposerX platform. In July 2025, a broad industry group completed live 24/7 trades, successfully achieving on-chain intraday and after-hours financing using on-chain USTs on Canton Network — meaning the core mechanics had already been tested in a live environment before the formal pilot launch.⁷

The Timeline

The sequence of dates is worth laying out clearly. The MVP in a controlled production environment was targeted for the first half of 2026. DTCC has since announced it plans to begin limited production trades in July ahead of a wider rollout in October.⁸ That puts the live Canton pilot squarely in the second half of 2026, with full industry availability following shortly after.

Why They're Also Using Stellar

On May 27, 2026, DTCC and the Stellar Development Foundation announced that DTC-tokenized assets would go live on Stellar's network in the first half of 2027.⁹ This came just days ago, and it prompted some market commentary suggesting DTCC was pivoting away from Canton. That reading is wrong.

DTCC describes a multi-chain approach that aims to enable DTC tokenized assets to interoperate across many chains. Digital Asset and Canton remain inside DTCC's wider multi-chain plan.¹⁰ Canton and Stellar serve different institutional needs within that strategy. Canton's privacy architecture and permissioned subnet model are designed for the confidential, high-value institutional settlement workflows that regulated financial institutions require. The Stellar integration is designed to support the issuance, settlement, and lifecycle management of tokenized securities, with a focus on highly liquid assets such as major indexes and U.S. Treasuries.¹¹

The roots of the Stellar partnership go back to Securrency, the institutional tokenization platform DTCC acquired in 2023, which worked closely with Stellar developers on features regulated financial institutions needed to issue assets on-chain, including clawback functionality, compliance controls, and transfer restrictions. Those tools were later built directly into the network.¹² That pre-existing technical relationship, not a preference for Stellar over Canton, explains why Stellar is in the roadmap.

The more accurate read is that DTCC is building multi-chain infrastructure and intends for different networks to serve different use cases and client segments. Canton is the privacy-first institutional settlement layer. Stellar is the public blockchain with compliance tooling built for issuance and distribution. They are not competing for the same role in DTCC's architecture.

Why This Matters

DTCC's participation is the strongest possible institutional validation of Canton as production-grade financial infrastructure. DTCC's mandate centers on risk reduction, operational resilience, and the integrity of financial markets, and its adoption of new technology reflects an assessment that the system can function reliably at scale, under regulatory supervision, and within established legal frameworks.¹³

For institutions still evaluating whether to build on Canton, DTCC's commitment is the most credible signal available. The question is no longer whether the network can handle institutional-grade settlement. The question is how quickly the broader ecosystem builds on top of it.

Interstice Digital publishes this content for informational purposes only. While we work closely with the Canton ecosystem, this post reflects our current understanding of DTCC's tokenization initiatives based on publicly available sources and may not reflect the most recent developments. The Stellar announcement in particular is very recent and details may continue to evolve. Nothing in this post constitutes investment advice, a solicitation, or a recommendation to buy or sell any asset including Canton Coin.
